SUP9 (Similar to 5160) spring steel is a high-quality steel alloy known for its exceptional strength and durability. It is commonly used in various applications that require resistance to heavy loads and constant flexing, such as automotive suspension systems and leaf springs. Its impressive mechanical properties include high tensile strength and outstanding toughness.

Additionally, these qualities are great for heavy duty knives, choppers, swords, axes and hatchets.

Example of a Simple Heat Treatment Process:

• Normalize your forged work to 870 Degrees Celsius and let it cool in still environment. This should remove stress and prevent splitting/ cracking.
• Hardening – Heat to 830 Celsius and hold for 2-5minutes andQuench blade into oil (Luke warm canola oil is fine)
• Test steel at an edge with a file, if hardened correctly it should be “glassy” a regular file should have a hard time marking it
• Tempering – Put in a kiln or kitchen oven on 205 Degrees Celsius for 2 hours, then let cool outside of the oven to room temperature. Then repeat at least one more time.
• Time to finish your blade !!
